Arduino Giga Display Touch not working

Hello,

I'm having trouble getting the touch functionality to work on my Arduino GIGA Display Shield connected to the Arduino GIGA R1 WiFi board.

I'm still new to the Arduino Forum, so I might be missing something obvious — any guidance is appreciated.

Setup:

  • Board: Arduino GIGA R1 WiFi
  • Display: Arduino GIGA Display Shield
  • Libraries:
    • Arduino_GigaDisplayTouch (latest)
    • Arduino_GigaDisplayGFX (latest)
    • All dependencies installed via Library Manager
  • Arduino IDE: 2.3.6
  • Board core: Arduino Mbed OS GIGA (latest from Board Manager)

Problem:

I'm using the official Touch_Polling example from the Arduino_GigaDisplayTouch library. However, I always get the following output on the serial monitor:

Touch controller init - FAILED

Touch input does not respond at all. The display shield is mounted correctly underneath the board, and all pins seem to make good contact.

What I've tried:

  • Reinstalled all related libraries and board support
  • Updated Arduino IDE and GIGA board core
  • Checked all solder joints on the display shield (especially on the J6 connector)
  • Tried changing I2C address from 0xBA/0xBB to 0x28/0x29 — but the library doesn’t expose this setting
  • Verified the backlight is working (brightness can be adjusted successfully)
  • Tested other sketches (e.g., for display output) — still no touch input
  • Changed USB cables and ports
  • Powered from USB as well as external 5V

Questions:

  1. Is there a way to scan for the correct I2C address of the touch controller (e.g., using an I2C scanner sketch)?
  2. Could this be a hardware defect on the display or board side?
  3. Has anyone else encountered and solved this issue?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

Best regards,
Maciej Krzywicki

I have a wire scanner sketch up on github project: Arduino_GIGA-stuff project...

It is a grab back of sketches/libraries that I use when I am playing with Arduino GIGA boards and sometimes Portenta H7. There are also some sketches that were adapted to Zephyr...

Arduino_GIGA-stuff/sketches/wire_scanner_multi at main · KurtE/Arduino_GIGA-stuff

Running on one of my two giga's (with the display board):

Scanning Wire...
No I2C devices found

Scanning Wire1...
Device found at address 0x50 (EEPROM,FRAM)
Device found at address 0x5D (unknown chip)
Device found at address 0x68  (ATECC608A, DS1307,DS3231,MPU6050,MPU9050,BMI270,ITG3200,ITG3701,LSM9DS0,L3G4200D)
done

And from my current playing with zephyr trying to get touch to work... I know it is
one 0x5d:

From the board/shields/ardduino_giga_display... in the boards directory the overlay
has:

&i2c4 {
	pinctrl-0 = <&i2c4_scl_pb6 &i2c4_sda_ph12>;
	pinctrl-names = "default";
	clock-frequency = <I2C_BITRATE_FAST>;
	status = "okay";

	gt911: gt911@5d {
		compatible = "goodix,gt911";
		reg = <0x5d>;
		alt-addr = <0x14>;
		reset-gpios = <&gpioi 2 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;
		irq-gpios = <&gpioi 1 GPIO_ACTIVE_HIGH>;
	};
};

Hopefully yours will show that device.

Note: earlier there were a few threads where people were having problems with
the touch not working:
Try doing a Search Forum of: giga display touch not working
There were severa hits, such as:

Good luck

It's answering with something like that:

Scanning Wire...
No I2C devices found

Scanning Wire1...
Device found at address 0x50 (EEPROM,FRAM)
Device found at address 0x68  (ATECC608A, DS1307,DS3231,MPU6050,MPU9050,BMI270,ITG3200,ITG3701,LSM9DS0,L3G4200D)
done

I think it's not detecting the touch controller anymore. I remember it was working a few months ago, so I would consider a warranty return at this point.

Hello @maciejkrzywicki

I’m sorry to hear that your Giga Display Shield’s touch controller is no longer working.

To proceed with a warranty claim, please contact our support team through the following link:

We’ll guide you through the process and help arrange a replacement if applicable. Let us know if you need further assistance!

Best regards,

Hey, i sent it in monday and i still didn't get answered.

Hello,

Thank you for your patience. We’re processing your replacement—apologies for the delay. You’ll receive updates shortly.

I am experiencing the same issues with my Giga Display Shield. I have same setup as the OP. I didn’t buy my Display directly from the Arduino Store but from a distributor in the UK. Should I contact them or can I deal with Arduino directly to resolve this problem?

Hi @gw7kdu. I'm sorry you are having trouble with your GIGA Display Shield.

Arduino technical support is available for all official Arduino products, regardless of whether you purchased directly from Arduino or from an authorized distributor. However, if you are requesting a return you must contact the customer service of the distributor you purchased the product from.
