thanks for getting bak, actually typo on my part, its meant to say 38400 not 3800 
and i tried it on both versions of the code, no luck on either..
it only said 'aquiring fix' when i sent the 1s tline of gps data from the pc to the arduino, any other time it just sits at the startup screen, gps connected or not.
boards used are RBBB and Boarduino.
