I tried the wiring you proposed....the raspberry pi use to show the letter k...now it shows nothing.
Is it connected like this?
With this its back to showing the letter K. I am sending the string (0,0,0,0) twice a second from the arduino but it shows as "k" on the pi...here's how it looks on the pi....
The connections are correct.
Do you have serial communications enabled on the Pi?
Are you using Serial1 on the Mega?
If yes to both, then I'm not sure what is wrong.

What software is receiving the serial data on the Pi ?
Tried both thonny and the terminal. Same results.
Is it possible to hook up an FTDI to the hardware serial1 on the arduino and plug in the usb in raspberry rather than the GPIO pins? That might solve it.
Absolutely. An FTDI as a COM port in TeraTerm or whatever - bing, bing, bing.
