Previously had both 1.8.x and 2.3.x installed and realized i need the 1.8.x version for an old project. Uninstalled the 2.3.x version, now the 1.8.x version starts with its logo screen then closes. Uninstalled it and reinstalled 1.8.X and it still closes. What am i missing?
For windows there is a debug version in the installation directory. Run it from command line and check if it reveals anything.
For Linux (and I assume Mac) you can run the IDE from the command line and observe the output.

No need to uninstall, I run both 1.x and 2.x all the time sometimes even at the same time.
