Arduino instead of atmel 16 on LED Cube project

I have a UNO and i wanna make this LED Cube. The Atmel 16 for the led cube of 4x4x4 cant be found anywhere. So what all parts of this project can be replaced by my arduino? Should i use AVR to program or should i take out the atmel 328 from arduino and put in place of atmel 16 in the circuit of the project. See http://www.instructables.com/id/LED-Cube-4x4x4/. I wanna make it badly so help

Looks like you could use a '324/644/1284 type chip in its place.
Use maniacbug's '1284 addition to the IDE
