Hello, my name is Tony and I’m very new to tech. I bought the Arduino starter book and I got through the first few projects and then when I would plug it into the computer, it just stopped getting power and is not talking to the computer anymore. I have a MacBook Air And I don’t know what else to do except give this thing away. Any advice would be appreciated. I switched ports. I restarted the computer I’m just at a loss. Thank you so much.
Hi @techstuffsux. Please add a reply here on this forum thread to tell us which Arduino board you are using. You chose the UNO R4 Minima forum category for your topic, which would indicate that your board is the UNO R4 Minima. However, I had some doubts since you mentioned the "Arduino starter book". If you are referring to the "Arduino Projects Book", then that is sold as part of the Arduino Starter Kit, which contains an UNO R3.
Please be as specific as possible as some Arduino boards with similar names have significant differences and the forum helpers can only provide effective assistance if we are aware of which one is being used.
If you aren't sure how to describe which board you are using, you can provide the link to the online product listing you bought the board from and we'll proceed based on the information found there.
Please provide a detailed description of what you are observing that leads you to the conclusion it is not getting power.
Thank you very much I have the starter kit which means I suppose I have the R3 I really felt that was what I picked on the option menu but I must’ve been wrong and I apologize
No worries. The topic has now been moved to an appropriate category.
Now please answer the second question I asked in my previous reply:
For the first four projects, I would simply plug the yellow cord into a USB to USB-C connector onto my MacBook Air in the little light would go on for some reason when I did that last week, it stopped turning on. I select the UNO and it doesn’t register with the port on the MacBook Air, I will still try to hit program anyway to write the sketch and of course I’ll get the error that it was unable to connect
For quite some time, or for the first four projects, I would simply plug that yellow connector into the USB to USB-C port on the MacBook Air, and the light would simply turn on, and I would be able to program the sketch. For some reason now whenever I plug it in the little light does not turn on and of course the port does not recognize the are doing now.
@techstuffsux
do you have anything plugged into your Arduino besides the USB cable?
if it doesn't turn on, it's usually sign of a short circuit.
If there was something which keeping the board in a reset state, you would at least see the power LED (see screenshot below).
You had it working and then it stopped functioning.
Unplug any jumper/component and try again.
yes, I unplugged everything and now the light turns on. I did exactly what the book said. Oddly enough, I noticed the book and the you tube videos show 2 different things, Which am I supposed to follow? Thanks
Hi, if I understand correctly the initial issue has been solved, or do you still have issues with this?
When I unplugged it all it worked fine. Haven’t tried it again in weeks. The YouTube videos and the book differ. Not sure which one gave me the short and this back and forth (expletive deleted) makes a simple troubleshoot a month long back and forth. Why isn’t a real person available to talk to to give a simple problem?
Please refrain from using profanity in your posts @techstuffsux.
I understand you are frustrated, but the forum is intended to be a resource for all members of the Arduino community and profanity does not further that goal.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Sorry. My apologies. When using the starter book. Should a person follow the instructions in the book or the instructions on you tube. They are not the same and I had a short. Thanks for your help
For the starter kit, it is better to follow the starter kit, not sure which video you followed.
I followed the official Arduino, YouTube videos that has the pretty girls
Hi @techstuffsux. Please provide the full and exact name of the project in the Arduino Starter Kit book that doesn't match with the YouTube video and we'll investigate further.
So far 4 and 5. The mood cue you tube gave me a short. Certainly nothing like the starter book. Let me know which one will get it to work. It’s fun,
Thanks. I see the circuits are shown in the videos here:
I compared those to the circuits in the Arduino Project Book and to my eye they are functionally identical (there an insignificant differences in the positions of the connections in the breadboard grid, but the electrical circuits are identical).
So you can follow either the book or the video and you will get a working project with no shorts as long as you make sure to carefully check all your connections. It can be a bit difficult to tell exactly which hole in the breadboard some of the components or jumpers are inserted into in the diagram, and even more so in the video. For this reason, it is a good idea to double-check against the circuit diagram provided in the project book, which provides an unambiguous definition of the circuit.
Thank you
