Arduino mega 2560 avrdude stk500v2_receivemessage() timeout on mac Big Sur

I can't upload any code to mega 2560. there is no extra circuit attached. I am trying to upload Blink from examples and still didn't work. and I did try on another laptop running Linux it works smoothly. so I think there is nothing wrong with the hardware.
I am running the latest version of Arduino IDE 1.8.13, and updated Arduino AVR Boards from Boards Manager. and also tried many times to install and reinstall the Arduino IDE.
the mysterious thing is that it works fine a few days ago, I really have no idea what would be the problem and how can I fix this.
any help would be appreciated!

I am having a similar problem. Same board… although mine is in a HIPTOP Duale 3 3d Printer. I installed the wrong firmware using Cura and now I have two lines of boxes across the display and cannot get IDE to connect…

Do I need to buy a new board or can this be fixed?

thx!

UPDATE: Purchased 2 arduino mega2560's (I know I only need one, but I'm getting the exact same results with either one) and have been trying to learn how any of this stuff works. My board has an ATmega2560 processor and another processor to manage the usb connection. 2 ICSP ports. So I wire the Arduino Mega2560 to the board and I have checked the wiring multiple times. Added the capacitor. Power on the board and plug the usb into the arduino. Everything has the correct lights. I had already installed the ArduinoISP to the arduino. I even went back to IDE version 1.6.3 without success. Although the output was a little different.

So I have the programmer as Arduino as ISP and the port and board settings are correct. When I try to burn the bootloader I get

/Arduino: 1.6.3 (Windows 8.1), Board: "Arduino Mega ADK"

Problem uploading to board. See http://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/Troubleshooting#upload for suggestions./

When I try it with IDE version 1.8.3 I get timeout errors or device ID errors with 00x000000....

Oh.. and I've tried a few different sketches and that has not made any difference.

I just ordered a programmer so I'm going to try that next. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
