Arduino mega pins for software serial

I'm using this code to run a DFplayer on an arduino mega, and it works perfectly :

 This example shows the basic function of library for DFPlayer.

However, I need to wire it on other pins than 10 and 11, because I need those pins for fading LEDs. When I try 14 and 15 the player doesn't initialize, despite those pins being software serial compatible.

Any idea why ?

If you already have a Mega, why are you messing with SoftwareSerial? The mega has 4!! hardware serial ports...

But back to the problem, I don't see why pins 14 and 15 should not work :confused:

How ironic is it that pins 14 and 15 are the Tx and Rx pins for Serial3 ?

No, but running Software serial on the Serial3 hardware pins does seem a little peverse ............

The PCINT macros exclude the hardware serial pins deliberately:

variants/mega/pins_arduino.h

// A majority of the pins are NOT PCINTs, SO BE WARNED (i.e. you cannot use them as receive pins)
// Only pins available for RECEIVE (TRANSMIT can be on any pin):
// (I've deliberately left out pin mapping to the Hardware USARTs - seems senseless to me)
// Pins: 10, 11, 12, 13,  50, 51, 52, 53,  62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69

#define digitalPinToPCICR(p)    ( (((p) >= 10) && ((p) <= 13)) || \
                                  (((p) >= 50) && ((p) <= 53)) || \
                                  (((p) >= 62) && ((p) <= 69)) ? (&PCICR) : ((uint8_t *)0) )

#define digitalPinToPCICRbit(p) ( (((p) >= 10) && ((p) <= 13)) || (((p) >= 50) && ((p) <= 53)) ? 0 : \
                                ( (((p) >= 62) && ((p) <= 69)) ? 2 : \
                                0 ) )

#define digitalPinToPCMSK(p)    ( (((p) >= 10) && ((p) <= 13)) || (((p) >= 50) && ((p) <= 53)) ? (&PCMSK0) : \
                                ( (((p) >= 62) && ((p) <= 69)) ? (&PCMSK2) : \
                                ((uint8_t *)0) ) )

#define digitalPinToPCMSKbit(p) ( (((p) >= 10) && ((p) <= 13)) ? ((p) - 6) : \
                                ( ((p) == 50) ? 3 : \
                                ( ((p) == 51) ? 2 : \
                                ( ((p) == 52) ? 1 : \
                                ( ((p) == 53) ? 0 : \
                                ( (((p) >= 62) && ((p) <= 69)) ? ((p) - 62) : \
                                0 ) ) ) ) ) )

These macros were originally defined in the SoftwareSerial library, but have been made globally available since then. However, it would be nice if they were available for other purposes than SotfwareSerial.

OK thanks, now I realize it was dumb to use software serial on hardware serial pins.

So I just rewrote the code like this and the player still doesn't initialize. I connected the DFplayer to pins 18 and 19 (RX1 and TX1) :

#include "Arduino.h"

#include "DFRobotDFPlayerMini.h"

DFRobotDFPlayerMini myDFPlayer;
void printDetail(uint8_t type, int value);

void setup()
{
  Serial.begin(9600);
  Serial1.begin(9600);

  Serial.println();
  Serial.println(F("DFRobot DFPlayer Mini Demo"));
  Serial.println(F("Initializing DFPlayer ... (May take 3~5 seconds)"));

  if (!myDFPlayer.begin(Serial)) {  //Use softwareSerial to communicate with mp3.
    Serial.println(F("Unable to begin:"));
    Serial.println(F("1.Please recheck the connection!"));
    Serial.println(F("2.Please insert the SD card!"));
    while(true);
  }
  Serial.println(F("DFPlayer Mini online."));

  myDFPlayer.volume(10);  //Set volume value. From 0 to 30
  myDFPlayer.play(1);  //Play the first mp3
}
  if (!myDFPlayer.begin(Serial)) {  //Use softwareSerial to communicate with mp3.

How about Serial1 there instead? And the comment is not quite right any more.

oqibidipo:

  if (!myDFPlayer.begin(Serial)) {  //Use softwareSerial to communicate with mp3.

It worked with Serial 1 !!! Thank you so much
