Arduino nano and DIL sockets

As i understand, the new nano will be 100% breadboard compatible.

Does this also mean, i can easily plug it into a standard DIL 32 socket?

Yes, it will work with 0.6" wide, 0.1" pitch DIP socket. BUT, make sure you

The Nano pins will not go in all the way, but they are making solid contact.

Since it appears to use square post headers, wouldn't a couple of 1x16 female headers make more sense?

YES, absolutely right. The best way is to use couple of 1x16 female headers like the below. Digikey P/N S7049-ND.
