but I'm thinking of using 4 reusable batteries as the voltage should be slightly lower.

Four Ni-MH batteries should provide a nice 5 V for the Nano, as long as they are not fresh out of the charger. Do not charge them while connected.

You certainly will have to keep the brightness down though.
