Arduino nano not recognized as a USB device on linux

When I connect my arduino nano v.3.0 power green led turns on but linux (Ubuntu 12.04) doesn't detect new usb device at all, hence I can't upload sketches.

When I connect arduino nano via usb 'dmesg' command doesn't output that new USB device connected.
I also tried to connect it on windows machine and it doesn't recognize new USB device as well.

So it looks like there some hardware problem...

What can I do about this? Is there alternative way to upload sketches because in fact board seems to work...

Hi,

If it doesn't work on Windows or Ubuntu, the problem most likely is hardware, you should return it.

Why do you say it seems to work if you can't even upload a sketch? How can you tell?

I meant that it is not totally broken and probably there only issue with USB serial connection but device itself seems to work because at least power led turns on when I plug it via USB, so my assumption was that I can exactly identify what is the problem or there are alternative ways to upload sketches (but I need some guidance on this)

Anyway I had better return it...

So after more precise investigation I've found damaged diode on the board, not sure when it was damaged but all I did is connected arduino to my PC via USB (no external power supply).

P.S. I returned that board.
