My arduino nano suddenly quick working--No longer detect as a USB device and the power light seems faint (at least not as bright as it used to be). Pressing the reset button makes the power button flash, but nothing more. Any advice?

Probably time for a new Nano as there are no user serviceable parts unless you have SMD replacement equipment and experience.
Lefty
Sounds like you shorted it out. As lefty says, maybe time for a new one.
Not sure what I would have done to short it out. What are some things that would inadvertently cause that?

The only thing that causes a short, is well, a short circuit. That is, connecting two nodes together that has no resistance.
The #1 cause is changing any kind of wiring while the circuit is powered.
Unfortunately not at all damage components fail immediately. You could have caused damage at some point without realizing it, and whatever is damaged finally failed.
