Arduino - Not Able to Get RFID to Read

I’m using ID-20LA Innovations with a breakout board, attempting to read an RFID tag. I’m new to this so I’m having a hard time debugging the reason that I’m not getting any read data. Maybe I don’t have the wires set up correctly? Should both ground wires go to that side of the board? It’s possible that I’ve done a bad soldering job. I wanted to post here first and see if anyone might be able to spot what I’m doing wrong.

I am following this tutorial:
http://tronixstuff.com/2013/02/26/arduino-tutorial-15a-rfid-with-innovations-id-20/

Here’s the setup: (black is going to digital pin 3)

Here is the code I’m using:

#include <SoftwareSerial.h>
SoftwareSerial id20(3,2); // virtual serial port
char i;
void setup()
{
 Serial.begin(9600);
 id20.begin(9600);
}
void loop ()
{
 if(id20.available()) {
 i = id20.read(); // receive character from ID20
 Serial.print(i); // send character to serial monitor
 Serial.print(" ");
 }
}
