Arduino on a obd2 connection. project.

Hello I'm looking for basically for some guidance on my project to connect a arduino to a car or mini van.

First thing is there are many cars, vans and trucks out there. I know most connections or all of the are the same connector. So would this project work if i plug it into my dads van which is a GM compare to if i plug it into my brothers car which is a Acura.

Second thing which device or hardware would i need to connect. I saw a lot of them out there of all kinds But not sure which one i saw some on adafruit and ebay. So not sure which one?

Basically looking to a start guide on what to look for in hardware as well a programming software.

You can buy odbII diagnostic devices for £5 . If you reallly want the job of interfacing to the socket and interpreting the protocols go ahead! Read the OBD specifications and weep. It'll keep you busy for a while.......

good luck !

Yes/NO

If you could manage the protocols, you could get generic data from a wide spectrum of different vehicles. The problem comes to the specifics, data that is actually usable for problem solving. That is specific to each manufacturer, and can be broken down to model years as well, which are subject to change with each new model out. If you are looking to try a diesel, forget it, they don't follow ANY of the rules. Even off the shelf OBDII readers don't like to interface with diesel trucks.

Hello thank you all for the reply back. I have a lot to learn about this. I was always thinking of building something for my dads and brother car and truck as a Christmas gift But seeing what i need to learn might take a while.

So my question i have is which device connection would i need? There are a lot of them out there.

Depends how much you want to spend. For £5 you get a bluetooth 'plug' which connects to software on a laptop with basic interpretation. Fo £5000 you get something much fancier with many vehicle specific codes

Yeah 5000 Dollars Us no thank you i ant rich LOL To cheap. And i was thinking of maybe using a Small LCD i do have a arduino 3.5" inch form banggood only cost me 10 dollars which i been playing with for a few months now and love it. Is there a arduino version board i can get? That won't kill my pockets which has holes in it already LOL

If you want to - go ahead. Now look up the hardware interface and the protocols in the ODBII spec.
