Arduino powering Lamp

Hi there,

I was just wondering how I would power a battery power lamp or some kind of light source that produces heat.
I'm fairly new to arduino. I'm really bad at putting a circuit together but I'm pretty decent at coding but I wouldn't mind a little coding help haha [:
Someone suggested to me to use a car battery and a relay.

Well what I want to do is to have a LDR with a filter around it so it can only pick up infrared and with the value from the LDR, the lamp would get brighter or dimmer. This is all done to melt ice :smiley: haha

If you have another way to do this, I'm happy to hear it.
