I've hooked up my arduino to a battery and the lights on the board aren't turning on but I hear a faint buzzing sound and I can feel heat on some of the mechanisms. I've tried multiple batteries and even plugged it in but still the same thing. Is it possible that it could have shorted out?

What is "a batttery"? There are plenty of different batteries out there.
Hooked on where? There is more than one point to connect a battery.
Give us enginering facts or ask Your mother for help.
