Arduino+Radio+USB media audio play+iPod support :)

Hi all,

This is my first post in this forum. I'm not even a noob, since I haven't purchased my Arduino yet. But since I knew about it, I have been thinking of a good excuse to put my hands on it, play and attempt to build something. Finally I got one.

My Arduino project is to build a media player that supports iPod, FM radio and MP3 audio from USB mass storage devices. I've seen some examples of similar projects, so I know it can be done, but I'm not sure if it would be too much difficult for someone starting with Arduino. On the other hand, I'm a programmer, and I guess that skill should prove useful for the task.

Would you stick to this project of mine as it is? If so, where should I start gathering info and buying elements? Or would you rather tell me out of it and try something easier for starters?

Thanks in advance for your help and feedback, and kind regards,

"Supports" is a meaningless buzzword. You'll need to explain exactly what "support" means in all 3 contexts.

Only then can we help you determine if the Arduino is the right tool for the job.

Well, fo example:

The site appears to be down right now, although I think the photo gives a good idea of the project.

Regards,

Just doing playback control is quite straightforward. That project is here - http://www.instructables.com/id/Arduino-iPod/. The Arduino isn't involved in the audio path at all.

Hi, and thank you for you answer. You're right, I'll try to be more precise.

Like in the photo above, I'd like this project to be able to play music from an iPod connected to it and charge its battery at the same time. Also, play FM radio (with an internal tuner, I guess) and play MP3 files from a USB mass storage device.

That's about it, I hope this info is enough to give you a good idea of what I'd like to achieve.

Thank you in advance for your help, and regards,

If 'Mass storage device' is an SD card, then there are audio shields that can read MP3 files from them and play them back. If 'Mass storage device' means a memory stick, then it's a whole lot harder, involving Host shields. An Arduino is not powerful enough to decode MP3 files by itself. There are FM tuner modules that can be controlled by the Arduino, and again, the Arduino doesn't need to be in the audio path, it just acts to control the module.

Thank you very much for your answer. So I guess I'd better go for a more modest project at the beginning. I'll dive into the URLs you provide, though. They seem promising.

Thank you again, and regards,
