Arduino Robot Encoders?

Hi guys,

I have a Arduino Robot and want to get the exact distance traveled. I have found that the most common way to measure the exact distance of a robot is by using encoders. However I have been trying to research encoders for the Arduino Robot, but cannot find any ways without hardware alterations which may lead to complications.

Are there any suitable encoders out there for the Arduino Robot, or are there any other possible ways to measure the exact distance traveled?

Magnet(s) with Hall Effect device(s) to track the rotation of the wheels.
