That is a decent design - your shield board looks good also. I have the shield you reference in the link and it seems to work ok.
Wish I had a bricked m168 chip to send - you are talking about "just" the chip? Not the total Arduino board?
Please post more info as you go forward your project - I'd like to learn more.
