Arduino Shield Pins...

Can you use the pins that are being taken up by an arduino shield?? For example, I have a data-logging shield that uses analog pins 4 and 5. Can I still use those pins for any other use?

Thanks!

Almost certainly not, if the shield has outputs they will clash unless it also has the capability to tri-state them.

If it has inputs only then maybe, but you would need to know what they are connected to and if it's OK to wiggle the bits when you're not talking to the shield.

You could possibly isolate the shield's pins with a mux, so we need to know exactly which shield you have in mind and have the specs.

If this is the same problem as your other post maybe the two threads should be merged.

I am using a Data Logging Shield from adafruit.com...

It is using Analog pins 4 and 5... And Digital Pins 13,12,11,10...

I need more digital pins!

You've still got a lot left, are they all being used for something else?

Do you need digital ins or outs?

Search for "595" on the forum to see many threads about using the xx595 shift register to get more outputs.
