Arduino Uno does not find Fona 800H

Hi,
I am trying to connect my Fona 800H to my Arduino Uno using the Adafruit FonaTest library (Arduino Test | Adafruit FONA | Adafruit Learning System). When I run the program, it is unable to find the fona.

how is the whole thing powered?

Lipo 3.7V, 1200mAH battery, as specified on the adafruit setup guide

and a different power supply for the Arduino, right?

yeah its plugged into my laptop

have you tried without the arduino, just connecting to your PC as they describe here?

and triple checked that:

Vio connects to 5V (or, with a 3V logic Arduino, 3V)
GND connects to GND
Key connects to GND (always on)
RX connects to digital 2
TX connects to digital 3 (9 on Leo/Micro, 10 on Mega)
RST connects to digital 4

I have not tried connecting it right to my computer, as I don't think I have one of those USB cords on hand.

I have made sure all the connections are correct.

Are you using one serial port for monitor and another for the FONA?
