The issue was caused by the fact that I tried to burn the bootloader of the attiny85 mistakenly using the setting "External 8 MHz" of the IDE without adding an external oscillator. Later, when I tried to burn the bootloader, the attiny was expecting the external oscillator. The issue was solved by adding an 8Mhz oscillator between pin 3&4 of attiny (see picture)
