Arduino Uno + Motor Shield v1 = Problems

Im facing quite a few problems when attaching my motor shield with arduino uno..im currently making a line follower robot and controlling the two 5v motors with the shield and also powering the arduino (with the external 9v supply to the shield) from the shield.

1st problem is that the program only runs when my usb cable is attached with arduino.. When the usb is removed the program stops working and everything stops.

2nd problem is that the yellow led starts flickering countinuosly on the contrary the on led of the arduino is stable.

3rd problem is that one of my wheel is whirring countinuosly and has significantly less speed then the other wheel and wiggles left and right (When using usb cable ofcourse since the program cant run when usb cable isnt attached)

Please guide me fellow arduiners and try to make your answer in noob term. Ive spent days and cant think of the problem.

Every image is above 3 mb so had to upload it like this.

Trolling complaints were made - I was simply trying to reset the board.

Play nicely.

The shield is dk electronics v1 which is equivalent to adafruit motor shield v1 as it supports the same library files...

I have not removed the jumper since i wanted to run both the shield and the arduino with the external 9v supply to the shield.

And yes i will notify you the results of the blank sketch but should i run this with shield connected or disconnected.

So i just ran three sketches with the shield connected.

1.i ran the blank code and the yellow led remain lit even after removing usb and using external power.

2 & 3. I ran a code to on and off the yellow led by digital.Write on pin 13 and it also worked with external power only..

It seems the problem occurs only when i try to run the motors.

With the blank sketch the on led was green, the yellow remain lit with/without the usb supply and the green light on the shield remain lit.

If the green led on the shield is a power led, the behaviour in reply #11 is normal.

Try to check the 5V pin with a multimeter while the motors are active.

What if i try to power the shield with a 9v battery and the board with a seperate 9v battery?... I think these battery have a very low current rating..

Thanks man you are a genius... I think this may be the problem... Let me check on it and report back..
