Arduino UNO not detecting GY-521 gyro

Hello all, I am attempting to obtain readings from a GY-521 gyro and accelerometer by connecting it to my Arduino UNO. I followed the instructions and code on the MPU-6050 Arduino Playground page, along with numerous online resources, but I have not been able to get it working. I currently have VCC plugged into 5v, GND plugged into ground, SCL plugged into A5, and SDA plugged into A4 (it communicates with I2C). Using the code from the Playground page, the serial monitor outputs -1 for all the acceleration and gyro values and 36.53 for the temperature values.

Test it first with the I2CScanner program to make sure communications are working.
