Arduino Uno R3 not being recognized by the computer

When I plug in my arduino into the computer to upload my code, my computer doesn't recognize the uno. I have tried different USB ports and other cords but it still won't work. I have the plugin to. Is there any way to fix this?

I would suggest you read the posts at the top of the forum as they contain a lot of help.

When you say "plugin" do you mean the ONLINE editor" ?

No the plugin I'm talking about is the plugin you have to download for your board to connect to the editor, thank you for the suggestion to read the top pages.

OK more confused.

Do you mean the IDE or the one that works on the web ?

The plugin is only used for the online editor, the one that works on the web. The real IDE does not use it. IMO if you can use the real IDE, you should.

Does the board appear in device manager? Do you get the bing noise when you plug it in?

If it shows as unknown device in device manager, drivers aren't installed.

If it doesn't show up at all in device manager, and doesn't make the new hardware connected noise, the board, cable (there's a plague of bad cables going around, I think some of the starter kits are shipping with really low quality cables), or USB port is bad.
