Arduino UNO rev. 3 Installation problem - cannot create virtual COM port

My operating system is Windows XP SP3, i followed the arduino installation instructions but the board instead of being listed among
the COM port as a virtual Port, is recognized as "generic USB device" (the name arduino doesn't appear anywhere on the device manager applet).I tried to install manually the drivers selecting them
from the /drivers folder but Windows says thar there aren't any driver on that folder.I've also shut down the firewall but the problem is not solved. In addition, from the Arduino software when I select the port I see a COM4 that is not listed among the ports in the device manager panel.
On the same machine i've installed also another dev board (TI Stellaris ARM) that uses the FTDI drivers, maybe there are some conflicts due to the previously installed FTDI drivers?
Thanks in advance for help.

I solved the problem updating the arduino software.I had ad old version of the software with the wrong drivers.
