Arduino uno smd R3 interface problem

im having alot of problem interfacing the Arduino with laptops and even some PC's.
i keep getting this error tk500_getsync(): not in sync:, i tried it on PC and it worked fine being picked up as Port 29.

after this i decided to buy another Arudino exact same as before but from my university. i had the same problem, ive been asking but still had no real solution to this all, the Second Arduino uno SMD i got get picked up as port 27 on PC's but on laptops does not get connected. i have even gone into control panel to select the device but just comes up as unknown device.

i don's really want to go and buy another one as i have two now and im sure i can get them working hopefully its just user error.
as another person i know has the exact same uno but connects fine and the board is on the same settings as mine.

Which version of Windows are you using?
Which IDE version are you using?
Are you booting your PC with the Uno already plugged into a USB port or are you plugging it in after the PC has booted?

I'm using it on windows XP it is plugged in once the computer has been booted up on the start screen IDE version used have been 1.0.3 1.0.5 problem with both.

Try plugging the board in before you boot up the computer. That way, windows is more likely to find it.
