arduino uno + web cam

Hello,
I know this subject has been pop up in the forum multiple times, but i just want to make sure.
I am trying to build a project which involves taking pictures from web cam and convert to binary image using arduino uno.
And once image is converted to binary image, i will either delete the memory or override memory by taking new picture and repeat the process.
Ideally, I want to do this 1 fps, but i am not too familiar with how fast arduino can process this task.
Is arduino uno powerful enough to do this job, or do i have to look into other microprocessor such as ARM?
I am open to any suggestion!

Close your eyes really tight and start clicking your heals together, and maybe you can make it work. Repeat as needed!

I don't know of any usb webcam that can output data slow enough. What you would have to do is reprogram the atmega16u2 to read the data from the usb webcam and then send it to the arduino uno you would need to have external serial sram for that. I better idea is to buy an ov7670 with fifo and interface it with your arduino uno. I did get it to work without the fifo however reading the image is slow and requires precise timing. The fifo version is much better. I wrote about and posted code on how to use the ov7670 with the arduino uno here OV7670 with both arduino uno and now mega - Sensors - Arduino Forum note that I used the one without the fifo to use the one with the fifo you will have to change some of my code.

quite frankly fps doesn't matter actually. As long as I can convert image i am getting from webcam to binary image in a given time i am game. I will look into your post. Thank you!

ChoboCho:
using arduino uno.

Where does this part of the requirement come from? If you drop that requirement, what you're trying to do is probably feasible.

ah well, because i am trying to fit arduino into a confined space, and arduino uno fits perfectly fine. Which arduino i should get in order to get this project to work?

I'm suggesting you drop the whole requirement I quoted, not just the 'uno' part.

You will need to receive an image from a webcam using an unspecified communication protocol which probably runs over USB, store the image somewhere, apply an unspecified transform to it to generate some different image, store that somewhere, and then do something unspecified with it.

I do not think that Arduino is a suitable platform for any of those tasks. If you filled in some of the blanks in your requirements it might be possible to suggest a more suitable platform, but you're almost certainly going to want a microprocessor rather than a microntroller and substantially more RAM than any Arduino has - I think that some form of PC would be your best bet.

^ Actuly I suggest that the webcam part be dropped in another post ChoboCho says he/she does not even care about speed so this is very easy just buy the ov7670 camera module I now recommend the one with the fifo. Then save it to an sd card. Why do people seem to think a camera with a microcontroller is a big deal. It is a walk in the park.

So do you think arduino uno can handle saving image from web cam and convert into binary image if i get ov7670 camera module? how much fps am i expecting if i go about your way?

ChoboCho:
convert into binary image

You need to explain what this means. According to Mr_arduino it's possible to take a serial stream from the camera and save it directly to a file, but if you want to do anything with the image other than pass it through one byte at a time, you're going to have to cope with the memory constraints of the Arduino.

THIS IS NOT A WEBCAM did you read my post. Also you are not converting anything the output is already digital it is not analog so there is no need to

convert into binary image

Hi Guys,
It is possible to capture the pictures with Arduino boards with CMOS camera modules like OV7670 or something like that.
But OV7670 output uncompressed image which is too large for Arduino boards to handle in 1 second.
As far as I know, there are some image sensor from Omnivision like OV2640, OV3640 or OV5642 which can output compressed JPEG image stream.
The image data is far less than uncompressed one, you can acheive 1fps with these modules, you can find interesting project like ArduCAM arduino based camera http://www.arducam.com. And wireless image transfer demonstration ArduCAM + Bluetooth Module = Wireless Image System - Arducam

I got the ov7670 to output an image in less than one second without the arducam. The arducam is nice but you can get by without it for some sensors. I also got the MT9D111 to work without arducam. The arducam is good if the camera module you want does not have a fifo verison I am just saying that it is possible to go without it but it is harder.

But one thing is for sure. The fact that the OV send the image uncompressed mean that with some time, you can send that image to a TFT screen with ease, since that the TFT screen need uncompressed picture. Also it would make the SDCard a excellent recipient to receive your picture.

Since there are libraries that already pass the picture from the SDCard to the TFT, the only thing that there is left to do is finding the way to pass the data from the OV to the SDcard.

Personally i was greatly more interested by the OV because it's sending something that is not a JPEG. The fact that the UNO can hardly deal with compress picture kinda pissed me off about those JPEG cam.
