Arduino UNO with Arduino Motor shield - quick power question

Hello,

I'm using a official Arduino motor shield on an UNO.
I'm having a hard time determining exactly how to power the 2 boards discretely, in order to get more power to my motor.
What I'm guessing is I cut the Vin pin that connects the two, then wire my higher power supply to my motor shield (looking at 10V, 1200 mA), then power the main board with my regular USB or whatever other power supply. Could I even tap the same battery pack for my regular board, since it won't be connected?

Hope that makes sense.

THANKS!

Doesn't the shield have a switch or something that let's you do that without hacking things up?

unfortunately, no.

They have info here: http://arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoMotorShieldR3#.UxZUbeNdWy4,
but I'm confused... sorry it's a newb question.

Looks like there's a solder jumper in the middle of the board - Vin to Vmot.

Looks like you leave that open, power the motor from one source, and power the Uno and 5V on the shield from the Uno supply.
Leave it closed, and power the motor from one source, that same source is Vin to the Uno to make 5V for both. That source should be 7.5 to 12V.
