arduino vs ATmega128 board?

Hey guys, Ive done some hobby electronics before but I want to get into microcontrollers with respect to home made robots. An arduino seemed great but after finding that they cost about $50 here in japan I started looking for alternatives. I found this ATMega128 based board including postage for $33. Have a look Im wondering what you guys think of it? Why is it a lot cheaper? I figure there must be something I`m missing :-/ :-/ Any information for or against it would be very useful. Cheers!

you need http://www.wiring.org.co, it works on the atmega128

You just need to find a cheaper postage option for arduino. Did you see on the arduino front page that there is now a korean distributor? they might be cheaper than a US distributor for postage to Japan.

There is nothing wrong with the Futurlec mega128 board. It uses a max-232 to comunicate over an RS-232 serial port. For most people, this is not as conveinient as communicating over a USB port. It also means that you always need a serial port, as opposed to getting power from USB.

There are other advantages that board has though, such as 2 hardware serial ports, and many more I/o pins.

But of course, you don’t have the amazing resource behind you that is the Arduino community!

If you’re slightly handy with Electronics, a Freeduino may make things a little easier on your wallet. They’re typically sold as breadboards, and you add the components. Have a look, may be a good way to get going.

Welcome!

That board does look pretty nice. What you’re missing seems to be that it lacks a USB driver chip, which would explain the price difference.
