hi, Is the atmega 8 the smallest or cheapest avr to make an arduino? how about a attiny?

I ordered some chips (328p) for 3 dollars a piece. Cant remember where I got them but it was a few weeks ago.
attiny was reported to be usable when they release the next version of the arduino software
