arduino with pololu encoder wheel installation

hi !

first i have to say i am a still quite a beginner to arduino and also to max, which i wanna use for this project.
i am trying to build an art installation with a rotating plattform, the kind that is sometimes seen on children playgrounds.

i have an pololu encoder wheel touching the plattform underneath, sending a signal to arduino, sending numbers to max/msp.

i got everything connected and i use maxiuno to interface between arduino and max:

i first thought i will get kind of a counting signal out of the pololu, but it seems just to a kind of on/off signal.
how could i get kind of a counting signal out of the encoder wheel,
lets say i turn the wheel and one rotation is for example 50 counts.
is that possible?
what objects i will need to use in max?

heres also another thread in this forum regarding my project:

please help, any information is desired !
greetings
