Yes, of course! The boards themselves differ in other ways....
But take care that you select the correct Bootloader when you flash it to the mega8 chip...

So which versions of the ATmega are pin compatible to each other?

I'm aware of the mega8, mega168 and 328.

AFAIK that's all of them that are supported by Arduino, of course there's also the slight variants ('megaXXXP, etc.).
