ATMega168 External clock

Hi,

Does anyone have any details about how to add an external clock reference to a mega168.

Specifically I'd like to use the clock source from the FTDI USB Chip.

Cheers

Stuart

hi

check the full (374 page) datasheet, that should be your first stop... Looking at it, you will see this:

"To drive the device from an external clock source, XTAL1 should be driven as shown in Figure 7-4 on page 35. To run the device on an external clock, the CKSEL Fuses must be programmed to “0000” (see Table 7-12). "

Then you just need to change the appropriate configuration bits when you burn the bootloader onto the chip, so that the Atmega knows it is runing from an external clock.

Hi,

Thanks, easy when you know where to look.

Stuart

yep,

the datasheet is always the first step for hardware hacking. Good datasheets will usually have a suggested schematic for the configuration you are looking for.
