ATmega2560 chip very hot on new MEGA board

Hi Folks,

I have procured a new Arduino MEGA board. Took it out of antistatic bag, plugged in a 9VDC supply into its jack, and the "supply on" LED illuminated, while the "L" LED flashes at a period of about 1 second. Then I just leave the board on the arm rest of my sofa (just to witness it can run on without any kind of fault ). I have not made any I/O pin connections to the board.

It runs fine (atleast it can continuously flash the L light), but I notice that if I put my finger on the ATmega2560 chip, it is too hot to leave my finger on there.

I have never worked with an ATmeg chip before, but I have worked with a PIC18F6627 MicroChip processor, and it runs ice cold. I would not expect that a small chip like this would work well in a hot state. Methinks perhaps something is wrong in the chip silicon.

Can anyone confirm from there MEGA board if the uController chip runs hot or cold when only the L light is running.

Much appreciated,

Should be cool. They only get hot when an IO pin is damaged; total failure is then not far off.

thank you..!

I thought as much.
