Atmega328P fuse read error?

Hi, I was wanting to check the fuses using Avrdude (5.10), but kept getting 0x0:

avrdude -c arduino -p m328p -P COM9 -U lfuse:r:-:h

avrdude: AVR device initialized and ready to accept instructions

Reading | ################################################## | 100% 0.00s

avrdude: Device signature = 0x1e950f
avrdude: reading lfuse memory:

Reading | ################################################## | 100% 0.00s

avrdude: writing output file "<stdout>"
0x0

avrdude: safemode: Fuses OK

avrdude done.  Thank you.

I have used both my laptop and computer, checked the port was definately correct, and can seem to read the signature byte but not any fuses or lock bits. I tried to use verbose output and got:

avrdude -c arduino -p m328p -P COM9 -v

avrdude done.  Thank you.

I am able to download hex files to the atmega328P but just can't seem to check the fuse settings. I am fairly sure that 0x00 for efuse is impossible...

Thanks alot

The bootloader does not support reading (or writing) the fuses.

Ah. ok, thanks alot

And the bootloader doesn't even support reading the actual device signature: the value you get is built into the bootloader.

Try code here for downloading a bootloader via bitbang - I don't know enough to say if it will work on other than a duemilanove with jumpers from X3 to the ICSP header tho ...
