Audio signal through transistor for switching?

Hello,

I'm working on a Ghostbusters proton pack replica, got it figured out most of the way using an Arduino. The only thing I need to figure out now is how to get the pack to detect when the wand (gun) is fired.

The wand has a speaker output through a 1/16" jack. I'm thinking I could route that audio through a limiting resistor and a regular NPN (or a darlington pair?) for switching. Audio signal comes on, transistor switches on the rest of the circuit.

Seems it could work. Any suggestions on other components I might need to add in there (caps and such) to get the switching right? Or, any better ideas on how to accomplish the switching?
