Automatic paint roller

Hi everybody, I would like to make a roller that moves up and down to paint specific areas only but I am unsure how to tackle this problem regarding the actuator design.

The roller should go up on the areas where not to paint, and go down and apply a specific force (that can be varied at different areas) on the ground when there is a paintable region. Any ideas and help are greatly appreciated!

My initial idea was to build a simplified camshaft to make it go up and down, but that only allows me to have one fixed pressure when the roller is down specified by the design of the camshaft...

That's not true if the cam is just used to lift the roller clear. The down pressure could be supplied by something else.

Without a diagram of your proposed machine together with dimensions and forces it is impossible to give more detailed advice.
