I built a coil winding machine years ago, based on a stepper motor, but with manual control of the start, possible pause during winding and stop after the turn count was met.
You need to be able to maintain and control of the wire tension throughout ALL the process.
You need to be able to stop the winding and hold tension at any point of the entire process, because stuff will happen!
You need to be able to release the steppers to free movement before the winding begins and after it is completed.
