I need to do build an autonomous robot that goes from one point to another (the fastest possible, it's a race) with an obstacle in the middle (look at attachement). Any ideas?

Start out with searching for how others have made robots.
Search here for similar projects.
Were you simply handed this assignment with no discussion of hardware or methodology?
Are you being given any hardware?
First, build a robot.
Then, write the control code. If you run into problems, feel free to post the code and ask specific questions.
