avrdude: ser_open(): can't open device "\\.\COM1. The system cannot find the

Hello,

When I first installed and used the Arduino IDE, I couldn't get it to work as, when I tried to upload to the board, I was getting the message listed in the subject except that it was saying it couldn't find COM3. It was then that I searched and found that I needed to change the port in device manager from COM3 to COM1.

Since that time, everything has worked fine.

I've been using the Arduino IDE a lot the last few days and have done a lot of uploading. And today, for the first time I am getting an error saying it can't find COM1. This is despite the fact that I have set up the port in Device Manager to COM1.

As well as this, when I click on Tools in the Arduino IDE, the Port option is greyed out so I can't select anything.

Also, I could swear that in the past, in Tools, the Programmer option was set as "No Programmer".

However, now it has a programmer set and I can't unselect it to say there is No Programmer.

I have my board selected correctly as Arduino /Genuino Uno.

I would appreciate it if someone could help me understand what I'm doing wrong.

Cheers

Tony

I do apologise.

It is now behaving itself again.

And I can't quite explain why?

The Port option under Tools is no longer greyed out and says COM1.

The Programmer is set as AVR ISP and that seems to be fine.

I apologise for wasting your time.
