I have error - see attached Does the AMEL 357430 ATMEGA P U have to be bootloader ? I assumed it came from factory already boot loaded . Have a board with ATMEGA 283P U ; board fabricated and I constructed with help and installed software - verify and compiled okay . FTDI is the HiLetgo FT232RL . When uploading I get a flicker on one small led light on the FDTI but nothing else . Uploading takes forever then I get the error "time out" Have a PC with a I3 intel chip but I don't think that is the issue
FTDI drivers installed , connections seem okay , FTDI board gets power . It seems that the board with the ATMEG 328 P U in not receiving anything and / or that the FTDI is not transmitting. Also on Arduino IDE not sure I selected the board info in sketch correctly - see attached ( also tried for processor the " 128 " under Tool
Read Some related posts - have capacitor on pin 1 reset line- okay there . Another point with FTDI hooked up and when I select "board info " in Tool It comes up as "unknown "
Any Suggestions ?

No, the raw chip from the factory is blank, empty, "tabula rasa".
You have to upload the bootloader via ISP first to be able upload programs via serial line.

You probably didn't understand it. This is about using Arduino as ISP programmer to program other devices but the trick is not needed anymore for the new IDE versions.
Why you've tried ATmega2560 if you have ATmega328P?
That issue resolved yes chip not bootloaded
Glad to know.
