Backup power auto switch w/sensors help

Hello, I am new to the world of circuts, pcb's, arduino, etc. and this will be my firs project so please try to be patient with me. That said, I will do my best to explain what I need.
I need to make a backup power supply with specific features. The said features are as follows; it must be plugged into the wall at all times, when the main power goes out the power source must auto-switch to the batteries, when the main power comes back on it must auto-switch from battery power back to the main power source, it must be able to have the rechargable batteries upgraded easily at any time, it must be able to have additional power output ports added easily at any time, and it must have a certain set of sensors.

The device would not be generating any power unless the main power source goes out or is unplugged.

The current amount of power I need is the same as either 2 sets of 4 (or if it matters 1 set of 8 ) standard AA batteries would provide.

I have not yet figured out exactly which sensors would be used so the sensor part should not be included right now.

Thank you for taking the time to read this,

I remember just this topic a few days ago - search the forum!

Which "standard AA" batteries? Zinc-Carbon? Alkaline? Something else?

Are you AA cells in series (higher voltage) or parallel (higher current)? Or maybe some combination, like two parallel sets of four cells in series?

A simple way is to power the circuit from a battery that is under constant charge.
But that might not work for your circuit or battery.
Can't give any better advice until you post the details.
Leo..

You could use a double diode arrangement similar to what is used in r/c aircraft.
That way, no actual "switching" is involved.
Diode unit is a to220 pack schottky as below.

You can read all about it here.....

You could just run a charger to keep the batteries charged and power whatever it is you are using from the battery.
If the mains goes off , the charger goes off and you are left using the battery.
