Hi, I have a TEnergy Universal smart charger. It states for 6V-12VNiMH/NiCD Battery pack, I am wondering if it can also charge on 6-12V Li-ion or Li-poly battery? TIA
I would NOT use a NiMH/NiCD charger on a Lithium battery of any sort. There are some differences, one of which could cause a fire.
NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) and NiCD (Nickel-Cadmium) cells become exothermic (hot) as they reach full charge, and the charger will notice this and so continue to charge them at a reduced rate called 'trickle charge' to top them off.
A Lithium battery reaches a certain voltage at the end of its charge, and the voltage applied remains constant as it 'float charges' to top off. It does not get hot during its normal charge.
Thus, a NiMH charger will not know when to stop charging a Lithium cell, and will overcharge it, possibly until it ruptures. This will even happen at the reduced rate 'trickle charge'.
So, please don't do this. The life you save may be your own.
