[Beginner] Arduino + Sensor to monitor refrigerator temperature

Hi, I'm pretty new to the world of arduino tinkering but I have a project to monitor the inside temperature of a fridge.

Some things to note:

  • The arduino board will have to use wifi to POST to an API.
  • There needs to be a wall power source, batteries won't work.

I'm imagining it being on top of my fridge with a flat wire leading to a temperature sensor inside my fridge. The flat wire will hopefully not break the door seal. Any other general ideas to get the temperature reading from inside the fridge that doesn't involve modifying the fridge are welcome.

What I'm not sure is which components I need to create a temperature sensor that can be about 20" away from the arduino board.

Thanks for the help.

Maybe this would help

That's a really helpful link. Thanks.
I'm curious how he got the temperature sensors into his freezer without breaking the seal.
