I'm a beginner with Arduino, but a fairly experience programmer. I was wondering if anybody could suggest a good starting Arduino board or kit perhaps.

Probably start with the Duemilanove which you can purchase from many distributors depending on where you are (personally I like Sparkfun http://www.sparkfun.com/).
It's not too expensive but can basically get running out of the box. You'll need a USB cable and that's about it if you use the serial interface as a debugger. This should get you started and from there you can see what applications interest you.
