belt grinder using arduino and treadmill motor

Good day all,

First off I'd like to say I'm new to microcontrollers and have no clue yet how to use them to their full potential.

I'm looking to build a bech grinder using a treadmill motor.

The treadmill motor I can get for $15 but it does not have any panels or way to control it.

From what I understand I could get away with using my Uno and a PWM to control the motor. But no one explains how to set that all up.

Also is it possible to use the Uno, PWM and a LCD Touch Screen to do this project? For the touch screen all I'm looking for it to do is have a start, stop and variable speed settings on it.

If someone could also tell me a suggested kit list I'd need to get it all going that would be great. I'm located in Halifax Nova Scotia Canada so if anyone of you is from the area and is willing to show me the ropes that's even better.

Thanks

Please make sure you are familiar with the requirements for mounting and balancing the wheel and don't exceed the rated speed. Grinding wheels can explode if they are cracked or spun too fast or overstressed at the mounting. They can be lethal.

Russell.

Thanks Russell for the advice. 90% of electrical work etc will be done by qualified electricians who have experience with similar motors. The arduino side will be done by me since they have never touched one either and I received one as a gift this past Christmas.

if you live anywhere near a town dump, go visit,
if you find an old treadmill, you can get the DRIVER, located under the tread, near the motor, not the CONTROLLER up on the handlebars.

simple pot to control speed. easy peasy.

put an ad in Craigs list for a used treadmill.
motor controller and frame.
belt is a great floor mat
rollers, bearings, the works.
