What is the part number / name of the berg strips on the shields? the ones that seem to have a male below and female above or is it a great piece of soldering? if not where can i get some?

and probably in many more places. Just look for stackable headers.

Everything seems to be at 2$ for a board. Male headers cost around 0.12 cents for the entire board. female at 0.15 cents (indian prices) and 2$ is like 70-80% the cost of the Atmega168

I think the generic name for these (outside of the Arduino community) is wirewrap headers (correct me if I'm wrong), might help if searching other places like farnel and RS.
