Best Arduino + Shield for smooth stepper motor

Hi!
I work at Technical University of Denmark, and I'm running a first year project where students make a syringe pump using an Arduino and a stepper motor.
As it's not an arduino class, I need a simple as possible kit, but with microstepping for good flow control.

I tried the arduino with the arduiino stepper shield, but the movemebt is very choppy.
Are there any shield that support real micropstepping?
I don't want them to use breadboars or similar, just connect two things, put on the stepper motor and run the code

thanks

Which stepper motor? What maximum RPM?

If you use a motor with gearbox, then you don't need microstepping.
A cheap 28BYJ-48 has about 2048 full steps per rotation.

Stepper motors are all somewhat “choppy”, that is how they operate.

If you just want to avoid any soldering or breadboards, a cnc shield is probably the most readily available option.
