Best board for MIDI control and motor control?

I have a project which would benefit from having native MIDI control from the Arduino, which I understand is only possible with a hack for the Uno. The Leonardo has this capability, and I think it has the same footprint as the Uno, does this mean it is also compatible with the motor shield? I would send MIDI notes to control motors on the Arduino.
